Excursion 2 – Ekskursi 2

The class went to the village of Bagek Polak in West Lombok to interview people about migration to other parts of Indonesia and overseas.

I interviewed Pak Muslim . He’s now 37 years old and.he migrated in 2007 to West Malaysia because, after the Bali bombings in 2005, his company failed. His company made crafts which were sold to tourists and after the Bali bombings tourists did not come to Lombok. Pak Muslim worked as a labourer in an oil palm plantation with a hundred other people from India, the Philippines and Vietnam and they worked very hard from dawn to three o’clock for the same income there as in Lombok, about Rp50,000 a day. Pak Muslim OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAdid not have a pleasant experience because his family was still in Lombok and he had to cook, eat and wash his clothes himself. After seven months he returned home not only with empty hands but with debt. Pak Muslim does not advise his friends to migrate for work.

Church – Gereja

Not far from my hotel was the Roman Catholic church, Santa Maria Immaculata. Its name is Portuguese and one of the parishioners told me that most of the members of the church come from the islands which had originally been colonised by the Portuguese during the 16th century. These include the islands of Timor, Flores and Ambon.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA The church is large and has some interesting windows that are painted to resemble the stained-glass windows of European churches.

I stayed here…

Saya tinggal disini…idoop-slide-facade

I stayed at the Idoop Hotel for six weeks. I had originally decided to stay for one week and then find something else but, when I knew the course workload, I decided to stay for the whole course.

Saya tinggal di Idoop Hotel selama enam minggu. Saya bermaksud tinggal disini selama satu minggu dan kemudian saya akan mencari penginapan lain, tetapi, waktu saya tahu bebean kerja kursus, saya memutuskan tinggal di hotel ini selama seluruh kursus.

The hotel is modern and has pop-art decor idoop-superior-double-roomin the public areas and the guest rooms.

idoop-slide-restoThe restaurant is called the “Café Warhol” and the food is Indonesian and western. It is cooked by expert chefs and served by smiling, attentive restaurant staff.

I was very happy during six weeks at the hotel. The staff were very friendly and some of them became friends. I was always greeted with my name by the staff and they always asked if they could help me. I was sorry to leave leaving idoopand I think the staff were sorry when I left.

Islamic Mataram

I’ve been here for five weeks and they have flown by. The workload on the course has been heavy but I’ve managed to do some sightseeing and the Language Centre has arranged some excursions.

There were about 120 students on the first three-week block from four Australian universities: Tasmania, New England, Charles Darwin and my own, Sunshine Coast. The numbers were less for the second three-week block.

Mataram is the capital city of the island of Lombok and of the province of Nusa Tenggara Barat (West Nusa Tenggara) and it has a population of about 420,000. About 80% of the people are Muslim and there are many mosques so the sound of the muezzins calling the faithful to prayer five times a day provides a framework to daily life. The approximate prayer times are Subuh (04.30), Zuhur (12.30), Ashar (15.45), Magrib (18.15) and Isya (19.30).

Religion is important in Indonesian life and people are happy to talk about it, unlike in Australia where religion is considered a private matter. The first article of the Pancasila, the philosophical foundation of the state, requires a “belief in the one and only God” but which God is not specified, so there is freedom to practice any religion within that criterion. Indonesians’ religions are indicated on the identity card which every Indonesian carries. The religions recognised by the state are Islam (87%), Protestant Christian (7%), Catholic Christian (3%), Hindu (1.7%), Buddhist (<1%) and Confucian (<1%).

My hotel is close to one of the main streets through the city, Jalan Pejanggik. There are many important buildings on this street, such as the Provincial Governor’s office, the Mayor’s office and the City Hall. The most imposing building is the Islamic Centre that will be the biggest mosque in the province with a capacity of 1,500 people. The highest minaret in the complex is 99 metres high. The Islamic Centre is still under construction.

Menara tertinggi masjid tingginya mencapai 99 meter. Islamic Center belum selesai.
